KAMPALA: The Ham Group of Companies is a prominent Ugandan-based privately owned multinational industrial conglomerate founded by Dr. Hamis Kiggundu. Established in 2005, the group has grown into one of the largest conglomerates in East Africa, employing over 7,000 people across various sectors. Its official headquarters, known as The White House, serves as the central hub for the group’s operations and strategic planning.

History of the Ham Group

The Ham Group was founded in 2005, with Dr. Hamis Kiggundu initially focusing on garment trading. His business acumen began early, learning the basics from his father, Hajji Segawa, who ran a textile shop. During school holidays, Hamis started his own small-scale business using capital provided by his father, setting the stage for a career in entrepreneurship.

As his business expanded, Dr. Kiggundu diversified into real estate, buying and selling land and properties across Uganda. In 2009, he established Ham Enterprises (U) Ltd, marking the start of the group’s commercial property developments. The first major project, Ham Towers in Kampala, was completed in 2010, followed by Ham Shopping Mall, which was finished within 18 months. These projects not only boosted rental income but also enabled the group to secure substantial bank financing for future ventures.

By 2021, the Ham Group had ventured into large-scale industrialization, particularly in the agro-processing sector. A notable milestone was the launch of the US$156 million Integrated Agro-Processing Industrial Plant (IAIP) at Akright City. This facility focuses on adding value to Uganda’s agricultural products, enhancing local farming incomes, and promoting industrial growth.
