Comedian Andy Dick survived an Andy Dick drug overdose after he collapsed unconscious on a Hollywood street Tuesday. Bystanders quickly gave him Narcan, the life-saving opioid reversal drug, and photos from the scene soon spread online.
Dick, 59, lay slumped on a concrete staircase outside a building in the Los Angeles neighborhood. He wore a brown jacket, pajama pants, and Crocs. His signature rectangular glasses sat on the ground in front of him. He did not respond to voices or touch.
Friends rushed to his side right away. One shouted for him to “wake up.” Others dialed 911. A bystander administered a dose of Narcan, and Dick started to regain consciousness within minutes. First responders from the Los Angeles Fire and Police Departments arrived shortly after.
Dick declined further medical care and refused transport to a hospital, according to an LAFD spokesperson cited by TMZ. He later told reporters he was “alive and OK,” though he did not share more details.
This incident adds to Dick’s long history of personal and legal troubles. In November 2022, a judge convicted him of sexual battery for groping an Uber driver in 2018. The court sentenced him to 90 days in jail and ordered him to register as a sex offender.
Police arrested him again less than two months later. They charged him with public intoxication and failure to register as a sex offender, as the law requires. Earlier in 2022, authorities also charged him with felony sexual battery after a man accused him of molestation during sleep. Prosecutors later dropped those charges when the accuser stopped cooperating.
Tuesday’s Andy Dick drug overdose raises fresh concerns about his health and stability. Opioid emergencies remain a top cause of preventable death in California. Thankfully, Narcan has saved many lives—including Dick’s this time.
Witnesses described the scene as tense but hopeful once the medication worked. “He was gone for a minute,” one onlooker said. “Then he blinked, coughed, and started talking.”
Dick has not publicly explained what caused the overdose. Still, this event highlights how addiction can affect even those who once thrived in the public eye. It also shows how fast action by ordinary people can mean the difference between life and death.
His latest crisis comes amid years of professional decline and repeated legal issues. Dick once held a prominent place in 1990s and early 2000s comedy. Today, his public image remains deeply damaged.
Even so, strangers stepped in to save him—a sign of growing public awareness. Many now carry Narcan or know how to use it, thanks to harm-reduction efforts in major U.S. cities.
For now, Dick appears to be recovering. Yet the Andy Dick drug overdose stands as a sobering reminder of addiction’s relentless grip.
